Who am I? (Hint: Marquese)
Usually here people highlight their wealth of experience as education professionals or stay at home moms with multiple kids and an entire day available to commit to homeschooling. I fall into none of these categories. I am an ordinary, single, working mom, who happened to have accomplished some extraordinary things.
My background, growing up in poor, crime filled areas and attending one of the worst high schools in the nation, is an unlikely start for someone who has now obtained an Ivy League MBA and a generous salary, but I have achieved just that. The difficulties I experienced while achieving my success have led me to analyze the major deficiencies of our education system and accordingly prepare my son to overcome it.
Like many of you, I learned through the school of hard knocks, but I believe we each have a responsibility to help those that come behind us and collectively we have a responsibility to come together to help our children.
My agenda is simple.. I hope to do my part to decrease the dire statistics plaguing African Americans in higher education and financial growth.
Who is Phoenix?
Obviously as a mom I think this kid is the most awesome kid in the world, however, even considering him objectively I am still very proud of him and his accomplishments.
Phoenix started reading at the age of 3, was able to add and subtract by age 4 and multiply by the age of 5. Upon entry into public school, he was skipped ahead one grade after testing on a 2nd grade reading level. He started 1st grade at age 5, but remained ahead of his class academically because of his love of reading. In second grade his teacher recommended him for the gifted program. He is now in 3rd grade, reading at a 5.6 grade level (5th grader with 6 months) and understands 4th grade math concepts and basic algebra using hands on equations.
When he isn't reading, 8 Year old Phoenix enjoys feeding the homeless and playing with friends. Phoenix participates on the local Soccer team, practices Hapkido Martial arts, and is involved with the Sigma Beta mentorship club.
